ABOUT
Park Ki-hoon has been recognized at home through the Special Prize at the Korea Figurative Art Exhibition and the Gyeomjae Tomorrow’s Artist Award, and has continued an active practice. Park’s works are held by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the National Assembly, Danwon Art Museum and the Bank of Korea, as well as by numerous collectors. Seen as photo files, Park’s works look like photographs on the theme of animals or hyperrealist paintings, but in person they are color-carved paintings that use a printmaking technique. Paint mixed with stone is layered in many coats and carved away with a carving tool, and depending on how much force the artist applies to carve through the layers of various colors, different colors unfold on the canvas. According to the depth, the color of the paint beneath is revealed and forms the shapes. Thanks to the effect of light and shade felt from the differing heights of the surface and the dramatic effect of seeing layers of many colors at once, we feel a newness not felt in conventional painting. Park places wild animals, which are gradually losing their habitats as civilization develops, in the middle of a megacity, and by titling the two opposing subjects of civilization and wildness “Coexistence,” Park sends us an environmental message.
