ABOUT

Ko Ryeo-myeong graduated in photography in France and began to make a name in Korea with the themes “Cho (草, grass), Chung (蟲, insect) and Do (圖, picture),” expressing Ik (wings), Heo (the meaning of existence) and Gung (life) through vegetables and insects. Out of an attachment to Eastern art and philosophy and to the analog, Ko photographs the subjects with a large-format German film camera loaded with film made for astronomical observation. Known as an artist who pursues the essence of the subjects by shooting at close range and enlarging the image, Ko expresses fundamental beauty. The hyperrealistically enlarged images let us see what the eye cannot, offering a completely different view and a new perspective on the subject. Ko describes the work as “a person passionate about the process of finding beauty through film photography.” An original worldview and refined aesthetic expressiveness, which appeals to the viewer’s emotions, are laid over realism and are recognized for their timeless aesthetic meaning.
