Artist’s Statement: Gilsang (吉祥)

Gilsang… I hope you are happy.

The dictionary meaning of gilsang is “an omen of good fortune” or “a sign that something good will happen.” More broadly, it symbolizes all the wishes people hope to see fulfilled in life. Our ancestors gave meaning to natural subjects such as flowers, animals, the sun and moon, and the sea, and expressed them in order to pray for good fortune and ward off misfortune. The fish signifies advancement, success in examinations, health and prosperity; the tiger is a strong animal that drives away misfortune.

Through my work I want to convey, sincerely, my wishes for your happiness. “I hope you are happy.” “I hope your day shines brighter than the stars.” “I hope you stay healthy for a long, long time.” “I am always cheering for you.”
